Galactose is a monosaccharide and building block of every organism. D-galactose has numerous important functions in the human body. For example, it is an essential building material for the walls of body cells, it plays a major role in the metabolism of brain cells and is an essential component of nerve cells.
It enables the sugar to pass through cell membranes even where insulin-dependent transport would otherwise fail. In the cell, galactose is then immediately converted into glucose. This property makes galactose particularly interesting for people who suffer from impaired insulin receptor function, because the "mirror-image" sugar can counteract an energy deficit in the cells. This is important because insufficient glucose metabolism has negative effects on nerve cells because not enough neurotransmitters can be produced.
Galactose is also suitable for people with lactose intolerance, in whom the enzyme lactase no longer breaks down lactose properly into galactose and glucose.
Our galactose is produced enzymatically from food-grade lactose as starting material, resulting a product purity of 99.5%.
