Ki Science Herbal Tinctures: From Formulation to Bottle

Ki Science Herbal Tinctures: From Formulation to Bottle

Ki Science herbal tinctures are among our best-selling products.

Dr Dietrich Klinghardt, PhD and Dr. h.c. Daniela Deiosso, MSc developed each formula with botanicals chosen to work synergistically in carefully balanced proportions.

A herbal tincture is a concentrated liquid botanical preparation made by extracting constituents from plant material.

Within herbal practice, the term synergy describes the way different constituents or botanicals are brought together to complement one another within a complete preparation. This principle sits at the heart of the Ki Science formulations: the value lies not only in which botanicals are included, but also in how they have been combined.

Dr Dietrich Klinghardt and Daniela Deiosso have used the tinctures in their protocols for more than a decade, as have thousands of practitioners around the world.

Their long-standing use by practitioners is important because these formulations did not begin as conventional retail products. They grew from the experience and methodology behind the protocols in which they have been used.

A whole-plant approach

Herbal practice has a long history of working with preparations made from whole plants. Unlike an approach that isolates a single chemical component, a whole-plant extract retains a broader and naturally complex range of plant constituents.

Plants contain many different naturally occurring compounds, and their composition can vary according to the plant variety, growing conditions, time of harvest and extraction method. This means that the quality of the original botanical material and the way it is handled are fundamental parts of our finished tinctures.

Quality begins with the plant

Our tinctures are produced for Ki Science in rural England on a certified biodynamic and organic farm specialising in botanical extracts.

Biodynamic growing places particular emphasis on the health and fertility of the soil, biodiversity and the relationship between the plant and its wider growing environment. The farm combines biodynamic, organic and regenerative agricultural practices, with the aim of supporting both botanical quality and the long-term health of the land.

Herbs are grown directly on the farm from carefully selected seed. Farm-grown botanicals are largely harvested by hand at the appropriate stage of growth by an experienced team. Growing and processing botanicals within the same closely controlled environment also provides a clear chain of traceability, beginning with the seed and continuing through extraction and production.

Not every botanical can be grown locally. Where ingredients must be sourced elsewhere, attention is given to organic, environmental and ethical sourcing standards.

Using a freshly harvested botanical allows it to enter the extraction process without first undergoing drying. However, plants are natural materials and there is no single method or extraction strength that is appropriate for every botanical. The preparation must instead be considered according to the characteristics of the plant and the formulation being produced.

This considered approach is more important than applying the same process indiscriminately to every ingredient.

How the tinctures are extracted

The extraction method is an adaptation of the traditional practice of shaking botanicals during maceration. Known as the rolling-barrel method, it involves rotating each macerating barrel through 180 degrees every day over a period of several weeks.

180°

Every day, over several weeks

This slow process keeps the plant material and extraction liquid evenly mixed as the extract develops. It also avoids relying purely on rapid percolation or boiling, helping to protect constituents that may be altered by unnecessary heat.

These decisions draw on established herbal practice and practitioner experience rather than manufacturing convenience alone.

Rigorous quality assurance from batch to bottle

cGMP MHRA INSPECTED BATCH TRACEABILITY CERTIFICATE OF ANALYSIS

Ki Science tinctures are produced in an MHRA-inspected facility operating under current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP). Production is documented and each batch is traceable. The facility’s laboratory tests every batch against British Pharmacopoeia microbiological standards, and each has a Certificate of Analysis.

What defines a quality herbal tincture?

The quality of a botanical tincture cannot be reduced to a single ingredient or production claim. It is the result of connected decisions: the knowledge behind the formula, the relationships between its botanicals, the quality of the plants, the extraction process and the controls applied to every batch.

Ki Science tinctures bring these elements together. They are formulations shaped by years of study, used by practitioners for more than a decade and produced with close attention to the journey from plant to bottle.

We are now sharing more of that story, so that the care behind these long-established formulations is as visible as the tinctures themselves.
